Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics Education: Realities and Possibilities

Paul G. Shotsberger
Educational Technology Review, Autumn 1995, No. 4, p. 23 25

This article explains how artificial intelligence can help mathematics teachers satisfy the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989). Three potential areas are explained: the need for AI programs directed towards young children learning abstract concepts; the adaptation of AI tools to the emerging challenges of authentic student assessment; and the utilization of AI technology for the training of new teachers. The author hopes for continued collaboration between AI researchers and the mathematics teaching community.
