Reproductive Health and Justice International Women's health Conference for Cairo 94

INTRODUCTION - In five short days, the 215 women from 79 countries who gathered in Rio generated a twenty-one point statement and strategies and activities to ensure that women's perspectives and experiences are concidered and acted upon by the United States International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) to be held in Cairo in September in 1994.

PLANNING PROCESS - Diversity was present from the beginning of the conference planning process in the international Organizing Committee (OC).

CONFERENCE STRUCTURE - The meeting was carefully planned to ensure plenty of time for debate, and much of the week was spent in working groups, which followed panels on various topics.

NEXT STEPS - Debates, clarification, and solidarity-building must continue amongst those present in Rio and others, during the next Preparatory Committee meeting, at ICPD itself, and in many other meetings at both national and international levels.

THE RIO STATEMENT - The conference brought together representatives of women's and other non-governmental organizations and networks active in the fields of health, human rights, development, environment, and population.

LIST Of GOALS, STRATEGIES, And ACTIVITIES - The Development Model-Population Policies-Sexual and Reproductive Rights and Health-Gender Power and Sexuality-Political Processes-Advocacy-Human Rights Instruments-Funding-Within The ICPD Process.

MEDIA STRATEGIES-POLITICAL PROCESSES - Women present in this group are all political actors working at different levels: grassroots organizations, national NGO's, international networks, and a few from government and donor agencies.

SUMMARY OF THE WORKING GROUP ON POLITICAL PROCESSES - Notes summarizing the first day's discussion, then mainly focus on the work of the "accountability" group the second day.

MECHANISMS And HUMAN RIGHTS - Some thirty-three women participated in this working group, representing around fifteen countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America, and North American.

DECLARATION PROPOSED By SOME PARTICIPANTS - This short declaration was drafted by a number of Conference participants from Latin America, with imput from women from other regions.

INDIGENOUS WOMEN And POPULATION POLICIES - Statements on how indigenous women are involved in the process of obtaining justice for our people.
