Despite the reference in the first verse to the Sanskrit story of the "Blind Men and the Elephant", this song actually emerges from a personal interest in the Society of Faces, or "False Face Society" of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people of upper New York State and Canada. This was a healing society that used beautiful and strange, "living" Spirit-masks in their ceremonies. I am most impressed by the practice in which if one is healed by the Society, they automatically become a member of the Society and are expected to help heal others in the community; a practice worth learning today. |
