Hal Lefferts - LYRICS

False Face Society

Five blind men touch an elephant
Looking with their hands 'cause their eyes don't see
Each one believes what he finds is real
They talk about Science and Religion and Reality

(Chorus): Hey, yey, we're gonna lift our voice up
Hey, yey, we're gonna be heard
Hey, yey, we're gonna lift our voice up
Hey, yey, we're gonna be heard

Dogma, dogma what do you say
Where you believe you are is where you're gonna stay
Manifestos and constitutions
All carry the seeds for revolution

(Chorus)

The Truth is beyond all belief
Got to begin with imagination
Break down the walls you see
All living together one Human nation

(Chorus)

False Face Society, False Face Society
False Face Society, False Face Society

We dance in a circle of twisted faces
Heads and hands all in the wrong places
Wondering how did we get here
There's no time for doubt or fear

(Chorus)

False Face Society, False Face Society
False Face Society, False Face Society

(Chorus) repeat to end

Despite the reference in the first verse to the Sanskrit story of the "Blind Men and the Elephant", this song actually emerges from a personal interest in the Society of Faces, or "False Face Society" of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people of upper New York State and Canada. This was a healing society that used beautiful and strange, "living" Spirit-masks in their ceremonies. I am most impressed by the practice in which if one is healed by the Society, they automatically become a member of the Society and are expected to help heal others in the community; a practice worth learning today.
