1. Why should I choose RCN for my Web Hosting needs?

We have the ability to source your total telecommunications needs within one comprehensive state-of-the-art network – designed and built to perform to the highest level of our customer’s voice and data requirements.

2. Does RCN own and operate its own data center?

Yes. Our state-of-the-art data center, which hosts our fully redundant 2000 products, is located in Northern Virginia. Managed Dedicated/ Collocation products are supported in our Chicago data center.

3. What platform/operating system (OS) does RCN use?

RCN's Web hosting servers run SOLARIS / UNIX and Windows 2000.

4. Does RCN own and operate its own network and Internet backbone?

Yes. RCN’s current backbone architecture is backed by our MegaBand® Network, a unique broadband fiber-optic platform. Today, the RCN IP backbone consists of a mix of cross-country OC-12 and OC-48 links. In addition, RCN’s strength is network distribution throughout major metropolitan areas, which includes multiple OC-48, Gigabit Ethernet, and OC12 links. Optical Cisco routers are employed throughout RCN’s high capacity IP backbone supporting over 400,000 network connections.

5. Does RCN offer dial-up access to the Internet?

RCN bundles email and dial-up solutions with each of our Web Hosting packages. In addition, customer’s can purchase a la carte solutions for their Internet connectivity needs.

6. What kind of connection does RCN have to the Internet?

RCN is a Tier 1 Internet Service provider with a National IP Backbone supporting over 400,000 connections. Our Peering consists of national relationships with other Tier 1 providers and connection in 9 out of 15 Network Access Points (NAPs) in our on network footprint.

7. What type of support do you offer for web hosting customers?

Web hosting support is available between 7 AM and 12 AM, 7 days a week, to help you with your Web site specific questions. In addition, once a Web hosting package is purchased, RCN provides our customers with an address to email specific technical support questions.

Note: RCN provides technical support for hosting issues only. We cannot provide you with help concerning issues not related to the hosting services we provide. If you have questions regarding a particular type of software, please contact your software vendors support team directly.

8. Which FrontPage components does RCN support?

RCN supports FrontPage in the following ways:

  • We configure your site for FrontPage by installing and maintaining the server extensions
  • We provide Technical Support related to the functionality of the extensions.
  • We point FrontPage users to resources that will help you solve problems, publish your FrontPage Webs and learn techniques for getting the most from you FrontPage software.

Note: RCN does not provide direct technical support related to the use of your FrontPage software. User issues should be referred to Microsoft’s Technical Support Team.

9. What type of security do you offer?

We offer our customers both network and server security. We provide firewalls, port restrictions to prevent open ports on our web servers, and FTP access based on user ID's and passwords. In addition, we also support SSL certificates for customers who want provide secure transactions.

10. Will I have 24 hours, 7 days a week access to update my Web site?

Yes. In addition RCN offers package bundles that include email and dialup offering solutions. RCN takes great care to ensure the stability of our customers and the network.

11. What Statistical package does RCN offer?

With our Windows Premium package and above, customers have access to our Deep Matrix reporting package that provides robust statistical tool that includes the number of visitors to your site, referral logs, and performance metrics. All Unix customers are provided with webalizer statistics for their site.

12. Does my site come with mailboxes?

Yes. RCN includes mail with every web-hosting package. Additional mailboxes and dial up accounts can be purchased as needed.

13. Can I password protect my web site?

Yes. As an RCN customer you can password protect as many areas of your site as you choose.

14. Does RCN support and offer Microsoft Access, ASP, and SQL?

Yes. RCN’s Windows hosting platform supports Microsoft Access, ASP (Active Server Pages and MSSQL (Microsoft Structured Query Language) databases.

15. Does RCN provide any Database Solutions?

RCN supports both MS Access and MS SQL databases on our Windows platform. RCN specializes in providing the infrastructure and network that allow our customers to develop their own applications.

16. Does RCN support CGI scripts?

Yes. RCN offers the ability for our customers to run and program their own CGI scripts.

17. How do I register a domain name through RCN?

Domain name registration through RCN is available with the purchase of any RCN Web Hosting or Domain Mail package. You can add domain name registration to your RCN Web Hosting service by calling 1-877-RCN-7000.

18. How long does it take to register the domain name?

When you request a domain name through RCN, we submit the application for you. We confirm the ability to formally register the domain name you requested within 36 hours. See our online tool to test the available domain names in real-time.

19. Who owns the domain name I register with RCN?

You do. RCN can register your domain name for between one and ten years with Network Solutions at a discounted rate. You will be contacted to maintain ownership of your domain name, and you can always renew through RCN. For any questions and for current rates, call RCN at 1-877-RCN-7000

20. How should I choose my domain name?

Most established companies prefer to have a domain name that mirrors their company name. Often companies get a domain name that coincides with one of its main products. If possible, companies and organizations also like to register generic names or keywords that relate to what they do. Ultimately the name you choose to best represent your business online is your own business decision. You may also want to register multiple domain names if you have multiple trademarks or product names that you want to promote and protect.

21. Can I register a name that ends in a different suffix than .com?

Yes. You can also register names that end in .net, .org, .biz, .us, and .info. Many companies are now registering the same name in multiple ways like .com, .net, .org, .biz, and .info to protect their corporate identities. It is possible that if you have a successful Web site, a competitor could create a Web site with a similar name, but ending in .net, .org, .biz .us, or .info in order to confuse some of your customers.

22. What if the Domain name I want is not available?

If you search for a name and it is already taken, try searching for variations of the name. Try lengthening, shortening, or using synonyms for your preferred name. Try hyphenating words if you have a two- or three-word name. Also, try searching for the same name with a different suffix like .net, .org, .biz, or .info.

23. Is a domain name the same as a URL?

A domain name is at the core of every URL, the unique Web address that locates every website. The URL for the RCN website is: http://www.rcn.com. The rcn.com part is the domain name.

24. Does RCN offer Pointer Domains? Sub-domains?

Currently, we do not offer pointer domains or sub domains, however we do offer our customers domain name registration and transfer.
