| Notes for Margaret Ellen Fletcher |
| A memory of Ellen Beyer: Her family moved from New York to a farm in Maryland I believe when she was a fresmhan in high school. She recalls that one of her jobs was collecting the eggs and feeding the chickens. "The chickens were my friends" she recalls. "They started running around when they saw me coming because they knew they were going to get fed." As a result of her bonding with the chickens, my mother was unable to eat the fried chicken that her grandmother often made, because she couldn't bear to do that to her chicken friends.2 |
