DEBORAH MCDOWELL


Biography

Deborah McDowell is professor of English at the University of Virginia. She is the author of "The Change Same": Studies in Fiction by Black American Women; Leaving Pipe Shop: Memories of Kin; period editor of The Norton Anthology of African American Literature, and co-editor, with Arnold Rampersad, of Slavery and the Literary Imagination. Her articles have been published in the Black American Literature Forum, Feminism Beside Itself, Studies in Historical Change, and Critical Essays on Frederick Douglass. Among her many honors are the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship (1994-5) and the Helen Homans Gilbert Lectureship at Harvard University (1988).
