NGSA Again Attacks Potential Renewables Mandates

Washington, DC -- The Natural Gas Supply Association today announced the release of two more publications in its series on renewable energy, A Reality Check on Renewable Energy from Municipal Waste and A Reality Check on Renewable Energy from Geothermal Sources. The publications were compiled from a variety of independent sources and are intended to help the public and members of Congress understand the potential impact of a renewables mandate.

Referring to recent press statements by renewables advocates indicating dismay with NGSA's Reality Check series, NGSA Director of Industry and Public Relations Charlotte LeGates said, "Our campaign is not an attack on renewables. It's an attack on mandates.

"A number of studies demonstrate that a mandate would significantly reduce natural gas demand for the next ten to fifteen years," LeGates said. "Naturally, we're concerned about this. But many policymakers and the public see renewables as environmentally benign and economically acceptable alternatives. Our purpose is to point out that there is no free lunch. Before the American public is saddled with a renewables mandate, we believe that they have a right to understand the negative environmental and economic consequences," LeGates concluded.

Copies of these publications are available by clicking here for the geothermal publication, or clicking here for the municipal solid waste publication. Copies are also available by calling the NGSA receptionist at 202.326.9300.

The Natural Gas Supply Association represents producers and marketers of domestic natural gas.
