Natural Gas Producers Release Statement on Change of DoE Deputy Secretary

Washington, DC -- Nicholas Bush, president of the Natural Gas Supply Association, released the following statement following the announcement late yesterday of the resignation of Deputy Energy Secretary Charlie Curtis and the intention of President Clinton to nominate Betsy Moler, chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, to the post:

"Natural gas producers have deeply appreciated the wealth of experience and commitment to the energy industry that Deputy Secretary Charlie Curtis has brought to his position at the Department of Energy (DoE). His expertise in the economic role of energy production has been a strong foundation for the development of Administration policies over the past several years.

"The news that President Clinton intends to appoint Betsy Moler to the deputy secretary position is indeed welcome. Her outstanding leadership at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on regulatory issues in both gas and electricity has helped the Commission develop judicious, balanced, and far-sighted approaches to complex, frequently highly contentious questions surrounding the nation’s move to a more competitive energy sector.

"As the Administration adjusts its programs to today’s energy realities and works toward a position on electricity restructuring, we can think of no one better suited than Betsy Moler to sort through conflicting industry positions and predictions, balance state with federal needs, ensure that recommendations acknowledge and promote technological advances, and advise Secretary Pena on sound economic approaches to energy policies.

"While Chair Moler’s leadership will be profoundly missed at the FERC, we believe the nation as a whole will benefit from her move to the position of Deputy Secretary of Energy, where her insight into issues and outstanding administrative abilities can help steer the broader energy policies of the nation."
