Natural Gas Supply Association Statement on Resignation of Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary

WASHINGTON, DC -- Nicholas Bush, president of the Natural Gas Supply Association (NGSA), issued this statement following the resignation yesterday of Hazel O'Leary as Secretary of Energy:

"Secretary O'Leary faced a difficult challenge when she became Secretary of Energy almost four years ago. Her Department was already the subject of widespread support for its abolition by many who believed the Department had outlived its purposes.

"The Secretary responded to this challenge by taking positive steps to adapt the Department's programs to the realities of today's energy marketplace and the related issues the Department's constituents face. Especially noteworthy have been her consistent outreach to all sectors of the energy industry and her efforts to reorder the Department's fossil fuel research and development priorities, in the process enhancing the federal government's view of natural gas.

"The Secretary also leaves a lasting legacy in her efforts to position the federal energy laboratory system to better meet the energy industry's needs. By directing the labs to obtain private contracts and engage in joint research with private industry, the Secretary, with the aid of the congressional delegations in states like New Mexico that host federal laboratories, has helped the nation make the best use of resources that can now be directed away from Cold War efforts and toward new and peaceful economic purposes.

"We thank the Secretary for her extended service in pursuit of the nation's energy security and wish her well as she moves toward additional achievements."

The Natural Gas Supply Association represents integrated and independent companies that produce and market domestic natural gas. Established in 1965, NGSA encourages expanded use of natural gas and a regulatory climate that fosters competitive markets.
