NGSA Details Problems With Solar Energy

Washington, DC -- The Natural Gas Supply Association today announced the release of A Reality Check on Renewable Energy from Solar Power. Compiled from a variety of independent sources, the publication is third in a series detailing the harm that could be caused by laws that would require electric consumers to buy renewable energy.

"Solar energy will appeal to some consumers in a competitive, restructured electric industry," said NGSA President Nicholas Bush. "But imposing a mandate would be a mistake. Even the most affordable solar electric generation costs 10 cents per kilowatt hour -- or approximately three times as much as gas combined-cycle technology."

"Solar energy is also remarkably inefficient," Bush continued. "A land mass larger than the United States would, for instance, be needed to fill all domestic electricity needs using parabolic solar troughs. This suggests that a renewables mandate should be approached with extreme caution," he added.

Copies of the document are available from the NGSA receptionist (202/326-9300), or from this website by clicking here.
