NGSA Warns of Wind Power's Cost

Washington, DC--The Natural Gas Supply Association (NGSA) today released the fourth in a series of papers questioning the high cost and environmental damage associated with renewable energy sources. Compiled from a variety of sources, A Reality Check on Renewable Energy from Wind details the harm that will be caused to consumers and industry by wind energy under a renewables mandate.

Energy Information Administration (EIA) figures cited in the NGSA publication estimate that electricity from wind power costs 4.1 cents per kilowatt hour, or almost 30 percent more than the cost of gas combined-cycle technology. Further, generators of wind power receive a 1.5 cent per kilowatt hour direct federal subsidy. When this is eliminated, wind power costs climb to almost 70 percent higher than natural gas.

Some groups are concerned about its environmental impact as well. For instance, the Sierra Club strongly supports wind energy; but in 1989, then-Sierra-Club-representative Bob Hattoy called wind turbines "the Cuisinarts of the air" because of the harm turbines can cause to endangered bird species. Similarly, chapters of the Audobon Society have noted the erosion and other damage to the soil caused by wind farms.

Copies of the wind power publication are available from the NGSA receptionist, or from this website by clicking here. Links to cited sources are available from the hypertext version .
