| Varsal Introduces Triflates and Silylated
Derivatives |
| Warminster, PA - (January 15, 2003) |
| Varsal, the world’s leading producer of
methanesulfonic acid and its derivatives, announces the addition of
trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (triflic acid) and trifluoromethanesulfonic
anhydride (triflic anhydride) to its line of products. Triflates are
only available from limited sources worldwide. Director of Business
Development Kimberly Morgan states, "Varsal has a unique advantage
in having both a very strong position with the triflates as well as
with the Grignard chemistry used to make the silanes." |
| Triflates are one of the best leaving groups
for organic synthesis (SN2 reactions), due to the stabilizing effect
of the fluorine atoms on the anion, and can be extremely useful in
chiral synthesis. When combined with silanes, triflates can be very
useful for silylation of unreactive substrates, such as primary and
secondary alcohols. |
| Varsal offers several different silylated triflates,
such as tert-butyldimethylsilyl triflate (TBDMS-triflate) to silylate
tertiary and hindered secondary alcohols; and triisopropylsilyl triflate
(TIPS-triflate) which is especially useful due to the steric screening
provided by the three isopropyl substituents. TIPS-triflate is also
very helpful to silylate primary and secondary alcohols. |
