PGY-IV Didactic Program
Community Consultation (Dr. Hung). This year-long seminar elucidates
techniques of mental health consultation, utilizing the resident's concurrent
practical experiences as a basis for discussion.
The Advanced Psychoanalytic Literature Seminar(Dr. Baughman). This
seminar focuses on further readings in Freud, including dreams and dream
interpretation, character development symptom formation, narcissism and
masochism. Freud's earlier ideas are compared with more current authors, such
as Arlow, Brenner, Kohut and Kernberg. The seminar meets weekly for three
months.
Advanced General Psychiatry Seminar (Dr. Joseph). This seminar explores
a number of issues central to general psychiatry. Ethics, racial and cultural
issues in psychiatry, the psychology of women, homosexuality, choice of
psychiatric career and the practical problems involved in developing and
managing a private practice are among the areas discussed in detail. Clinical
examples provided by residents and faculty are used to initiate more general
discussion. The seminar runs throughout the year and is led by Dr. Joseph, M.D.
and Paul Chodoff, M.D., a senior clinical psychiatrist from the community.
Advanced Psychopharmacology and Psychobiology (Dr. Livingood). This
seminar provides an update on biological and psychopharmacological issues in
psychiatry. The seminar focuses on treatment of outpatient disorders. A format
of assigned weekly readings, group discussion, and didactic elaboration is
followed.
Alternative Psychotherapeutic Approaches (Dr. Gorelick). This is a three
month course which explores of the expressive therapies including Jungian and
the uses of the arts in psychotherapy. Imagery, including hypnosis is one of
the topics included.
Psychopharmacology and Psychobiology Supervision Seminar. This Clinical
Seminar runs throughout the year. Residents present case material which serves
as the basis for extensive investigation. Psychiatrists from the NIMH
Neurosciences Center may participate in the discussion of specific topics.
Advanced Child/Adolescent Psychiatry continuous Case Seminar(Dr.
Kolansky). A continuing focus on treatment issues utilizing resident
presentations of their clinical work (20 + sessions).
Selected Topics in Child/Adolescent Psychiatry (Dr. Kolansky). An
advanced course looking at issues of ongoing current importance in child
development, psychopathology and treatment (20+ sessions).
