Fun & The SAT
... A contradiction in terms?
"Fun and the SAT = a contradiction in terms," say you? "Wrong!" say we. "For sure," rejoin you in snappy repartee. "Looking up and memorizing 1000 SAT words, that most dreaded of all exams, (ominous drum roll) is a chuckle a minute. My ribs can scarcely bear the wear and tear of such side splitting guffawing."
Hang loose, friend. Trust me. 1000 words only seem a plethora (look it up). Sure, it sounds ludicrous to mention the big V (verbal) without thoughts of impending doom and disaster. They might even finally discover you're not now, never were, never will be college material -- that you're a sham and (gulp) stupid! But, after you use PowerWords cartoon flashcards, no one, mainly you, will ever doubt your erudition again. You just need a way to learn that's relevant to you. It's got to be fast, funny, effective -- has to make the word "memorize" obsolete and put you in control, not by teaching cram strategies for a high SAT score, but for the biggie -- the lifelong rewards reaped through the awesome power of language.
With PowerWords® you won't look it up, you'll laugh it up! Family, friends, and teachers will think you took a crash course in a foreign language -- English! But, try the old way first. Imagine you're having a nightmare, taking the "#*%" and "noisome" is the only word given on the verbal. You never heard of it. It obviously means "noisy," but if it's obvious, it's a trick. As your pencil turns into a snake, you awake in a cold sweat, grope for the dictionary, look it up, write definition, use in sentence (try Webster's -- safer even if you don't understand it). Now commit it to memory -- say, write, think -- whatever it takes to achieve the crammer's goal: maximal memorization!
Now try the PowerWord® fun way. Pluck the "noisome" card from the 300 in the fancy file box. First, look at side of card with target word, phonetic spelling (no weird symbols), part of speech. Have look-see at italicized first definition, it's the easy one; then the bold typed ones, all SAT synonyms. Now incipient scholars, time for the cartoon. Sure it's silly -- but right on target with the sentence it represents. Frankly you could get the word's meaning straight from the sentence without the cartoon, but it wouldn't be nearly as much fun or indelibly imprint it in your mind's eye. So far, you know the easy definition of "noisome" is "stinky," and the sentence says what the cartoon shows. "The nose knows when to dispose of noisome garbage." Now turn the card over. Only target word and cartoon appear. Darned if the latest research doesn't work like a charm. Zap! Association of the word, cartoon, and sentence triggers your immediate recall of the word's meaning, simultaneously imbedding it in your mind. So, if "one picture is worth a thousand words," then 300 PowerWords Cartoons are worth 1000 SAT words!
