I-66
inside the Capital Beltway is a major commuter route, connecting
the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. and the downtown
area via the Key Bridge and the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge.
We surveyed and designed the 1.2 mile portion of I-66 just west
of the Key Bridge, which provides relief to other non-access controlled
routes such as US 29.
Challenges
included several road and stream crossings, numerous nearby residences,
steep terrain which required special grading techniques and numerous
retaining walls, and the need to provide hiker-biker facilities,
in the form of a parallel trail and connections to the communities.
