Falls
Road is a 2-lane rural arterial in northern Baltimore County, passing
through the Gunpowder Falls State Park and connecting the communities
of Mount Carmel and Parkton. The road was carried over the Gunpowder
Falls on a 70-foot long single span truss bridge built in 1884 by
the Pittsburgh Bridge Company. Due to inadequate load capacity and
substantial deterioration of the superstructure, by the early 1990s
the bridge could no longer carry the required loads, and had to
be closed.
We
designed a replacement bridge with a truss structure similar to
that of the original bridge, utilizing the original abutments. This
maintained the existing waterway opening as well as the historic
nature of the bridge in its rural setting.
