In
the early 1990s, vandals set fire to the 85-foot long Loys Station
Covered Bridge, which carries Old Frederick Road over Owens Creek
in Loys Station Park. With the bridge closed, residents had to use
a three mile detour.
We
designed the rehabilitation of the bridge, and then administered
the construction. The historic authenticity of the structure was
of the utmost importance. We coordinated closely with the Maryland
Historical Trust and the Frederick County Covered Bridge Preservation
Society to utilize as much of the original bridge as possible, and
provide historically correct replacement materials. In addition
to providing a structure nearly identical to the original, the load-carrying
capacity of the bridge was increased to enable it to carry modern
loads.
