Valley
Street, part of the street grid system in Cumberland, is carried
over Wills Creek and the CSX railroad by a 190-foot long 3-span
bridge built in 1953. Due to deterioration of the superstructure,
by the early 1990s the bridge had limited load-carrying capacity.
Although the City wanted to rehabilitate the bridge and increase
its capacity, the City also wanted to maintain its historic appearance.
Working
closely with the Maryland Historical Trust, we designed repairs
that not only increased the bridge's capacity, but also enhanced
its historic appearance, including brick parapet and period lighting
standards.
