The
first contract undertaken by the Company was the surveying and design
of 16 miles of US 240 (currently I-270) from Frederick to Brink,
followed shortly by the surveying and design of the remaining 18
miles of US 240 from Brink to Chevy Chase. Over the years, the name
of the route has been changed from US 240 to I-70S, to I-270. The
latter contract also included an eight mile section of what is now
the Capital Beltway from the American Legion Bridge to MD 185.
During the 1980s, we conducted a project planning study for the
widening of 16 miles of I-270, from the Y-Split to MD 121, which
resulted in an 8-lane mainline (with HOV lanes) flanked by 2-lane
Collector-Distributor roadways. This project won the National Quality
Initiative Achievement Award in Maryland in 1995. We also performed
project planning studies for both I-270 and the I-270 West Spur
from the Y-Split to I-495, and for improvement of the interchanges
at Democracy Boulevard and MD 187.
While US 240 (south of MD 121) carried fewer than 8,000 vehicles
per day in 1960, by 1997 it was carrying 75,000 vehicles per day,
and the area along the roadway has become the I-270 Technology Center,
one of the premier areas of high-technology in the country, and
a key component of the economic well-being of Maryland.
