Calvert
Road was a 4-lane roadway connecting US 1 and MD 201 in College
Park. With the construction of WMATA's Metro Green Line along
the CSX track, Calvert Road needed to be closed at the railroad.
We performed the project planning study to develop and evaluate
alternative routes, with the 2.5 mile long selected alternative
(now known as Paint Branch Parkway) having an underpass at the
CSX/Green Line crossing and intersecting US 1 opposite the University
of Maryland's North Gate.
Issues
of particular concern included the College Park Airport (oldest
continually operating airport in the world and a site of flights
by the Wright brothers), parkland, floodplain, wetlands, business
displacements, and community impact. Our work included preliminary
engineering, environmental analyses (air, noise, natural environment,
socioeconomic), preparation of environmental documents, and coordination
with the public and regulatory agencies.
