MSP
vs. MSP
Managed Services or Management Services
It seems they are both here to stay
The term MSP has been applied to managed service providers for the past few years but
recently MSP has undergone an acronym change and become known as management service
provider.
How much do they really differ?
Fundamentally not that much. What it comes down to is that both are offering
businesses the opportunity to outsource the management of more and more of the internet
infrastructure. Managed Service Providers use a much broader definition of the
services that can be managed from outside a companies internal network such as Firewalls,
VPNs, Corporate Messaging etc. Management Service Providers (at this time)
seem to be limiting themselves to network monitoring services such as monitoring servers,
routers, firewalls & online apps.
Who will win?
Its likely that no-one will. The managed services programs and promotions from CheckPoint, Nortel, Lucent and others will likely become blurred with
the management services being pushed by Manage.com, Siterock and others.
The Future?
The recent usage of the MSP (Management Services) acronym has really taken flight since
the term was (re)coined by Stephen Elliot, formerly a Gartner analyst, and the formation
of the MSP consortium in June of 2000. The six month old
organization has almost 80 members and has been showing up quite frequently in the trade
rags.
Closing thoughts
.perhaps one of them should have chosen ISP (IT Service Providers).... that
wouldnt be any more confusing would it?
