The de Watch data collector has become the workhorse of Deister Electronics. Its durability and suitability for almost any application in any environment has made it popular with a large, diverse group of users. Its versatility has appealed to guard patrol companies (including Wackenhut International) as well as facilities managers responsible for a wide range of activities (such as equipment check in/check out, fixed asset management, fire and safety inspections, mechanical inspections, and, of course, security patrol verification).
The de Watch is factory equipped with infra-red optics, so it can read opaquely coated (KSI/L ) or plastic encapsulated (KSI-P) bar codes as well as traditional black and white (KSB) bar codes. Its internal programming can allow it to read Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5 (either 7+1 or 11+1), or specially encoded Deister bar code strips designed with security in mind. Of course, the de Watch is compatible with all Deister Y2K compatiblesoftware packages.
The de Watch is powered by a single 9-volt alkaline (or lithium) battery which can be purchased at any corner store. Changing the battery is a breeze--just remove the two "snake-eye" screws securing the battery compartment, remove the old battery, pop in the new one, and it's ready to go! The memory is retained by a back-up capacitor while the battery is disconnected. Unlike units made by most of our competitors, there is never any "down time" for battery charging with the de Watch. Other data collectors can require up to 14 hours of recharging between uses, and then might not hold their battery charge over a 4-day weekend! Furthermore, recharging requires electrical contacts on the outside of the units that could easily become shorted in damp weather or in certain applications--this is never a problem with the de Watch. There are no external contacts of any kind; the battery compartment is sealed and all data transfer is accomplished via opto-isolation techniques.
Perhaps the most appealing feature of the de Watch is its ease of use. The unit is activated by a single, sealed button. The employee never has to enter codes for any reason. The unit can read bar codes at a wide range of angles, in any direction. Unusual occurances encountered during an inspection are easily documented with the Special Event Card. Employee information is entered simply by swiping a special Personnel ID bar code. The absence of a keypad on the de Watch makes it suitable for use in the harshest environments by the least skilled of employees.
