The "proxscan" Bar Code/Proximity Chip Reader

[Deister Home]

The proxscan data collector is the newest dual-technology reader from Deister Electronics. Its durability and suitability for almost any application in any environment makes it an ideal choice for a large, diverse group of users. Its versatility has appealed to prison officials, guard patrol companies, public housing managers, and any facility manager responsible for wide-ranging, multiple activities including equipment inspections and check in/out, fixed asset inventory, fire and safety inspections, mechanical inspections, parking verification, and (of course!) security patrol verification.

The proxscan is factory equipped with infra-red optics, so it can read opaquely coated (KSI/L ) or plastic encapsulated (KSI-P) bar codes as well as traditional black and white (KSB) bar codes. It also reads encoded micro-chip proximity transponder tags (the KSC series of checkpoints) at distances up to 1.25 inches. Its internal programming allows it to read only specially encoded Deister bar codes strips designed with security applications in mind. Its proximity reading ability allows it to read checkpoints that are completely sealed inside walls and are completely impervious to the effects of weather. These two reading technologies combine to provide a system that is extremely flexible and user-friendly as well as durable! Of course, the proxscan is compatible with all Deister software packages.

The proxscan is powered by four 1.5-volt "AA" batteries which can be purchased at any corner store. Changing the batteries is a snap: just remove the two "snake-eye" screws securing the battery compartment, lift the lid, pop out the old batteries and snap in the new, and it's ready to go! There's even a back-up capacitor to retain the unit's memory for a short period when the batteries are removed. Unlike units made by most of our competitors, there is never any "down time" for battery recharging with the proxscan. Other data collectors can require up to 14 hours for battery recharging on a daily basis, and probably won't hold their charge over a 4-day weekend. Furthermore, recharging commonly requires electrical contacts on the outside of the unit that could easily become shorted in damp weather or in certain applications--this is never a problem with the proxscan. There are no external contacts; the battery compartment is sealed and all data transfer and capture is accomplished via opto-isolation techniques and inductive coupling.

Perhaps the most appealing feature of the proxscan is that it's so easy to use. The unit is activated by one of two sealed button switches (depending on the data capture to be used--one for bar codes, the other for proximity transponders). The collector can read bar codes and proximity transponders at a wide range of angles in any orientation or direction. The employee never has to enter any codes for any reason. Unusual occurrences encountered during an inspection are easily documented with the Special Event Card. Employee information is entered simply by swiping a special Personnel ID bar code. The absence of a keypad on the proxscan makes it suitable for use in the harshest environments by the least skilled employees.
