An excellent example of a cafe-cum-restaurant that stands up to more expensive competition. Quality ingredients are used to produce a range of Italian dishes such as carpaccio (slices of raw beef) and saltimbocca (veal with Parma ham), with tiramisu for dessert. French fries with mayonnaise provide a local touch. The 1950's-style interior with kitsch lights sets the scene for a relaxed dinner with very friendly service. If you have to wait for a table, the owner will ever come and get you from the pub across the street. With a well-established reputation built up over a number of years, many people consider this to be the best Indonesian restaurant in the area. Traditional dishes are served in a crowded and casual atmosphere. Most people will try the rijsttafel (see page 227), which may include satay, ayam (chicken), ikan (fish), telor (egg) and rendang (beef), as well as various condiments such as shredded coconut, sweet and sour vegetables and krupuk (shrimp crackers). It is advisable to book in advance. Claes Claesz occupies the premises of a former poorhouse, which was built in 1616. Some amusing touches now characterize this small Dutch restaurant, such as ice buckets made from tiny garden pails, plates sporting the Dutch children's alphabet and toast racks on the table. Portions are generous, and dishes served include farmer's pate, poached salmon and pancakes filled with vanilla ice cream. The special jenvevers (see 48)) on offer here can be addictive. These and the local Jordaan character will put you in the mood for a highly enjoyable evening. A very popular restaurant with regular customers, who appreciate the homestyle cooking of Prego's female Sardinian chef. The menu, which is displayed on a blackboard, changes frequently and includes a wide selection of market-fresh meat and fish dishes. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable, not the least about the excellent wine list. This is not exclusively Italian but includes a range of wines to compliment the food. It is advisable to book in advance. From the theatrically designed interior, with distressed walls and hops used as floral decoration, to kosher bonbons and cakes from Michelin-star chef Constant Fonk (based in his own restaurant in Hoorn), this is very definitely a restaurant with a difference. Main courses are well made, and the desserts are really worth waiting for. The food is complimented by an interesting wine list which contains many French country wines at affordable prices. The friendly service and ambiance are also great attractions and in summer the large terrace is always full.
