Jane Lorber Appointed FMCS General Counsel

Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Director (FMCS) John Calhoun Wells today announced the appointment of Commissioner Jane A. Lorber as FMCS General Counsel. Lorber has been a mediator in the agency’s West Trenton, New Jersey field office since June 1997, and has served as Acting General Counsel for the last six weeks.

"Jane Lorber brings to this position an impressive legal and collective bargaining background," said Wells. "Her abilities in the management of a law office as a partner in a large firm, together with her "at the table" experience representing labor unions and employers, and her training and casework as a federal mediator, make her unusually well qualified for this position."

Prior to joining FMCS, Lorber was a partner in the firm of Brown and Connery, LLP in New Jersey, the first woman partner in the firm’s nearly 50 year history. Her clients included labor unions, at both local and international levels, multinational corporations, municipal governments, county agencies and intergovernmental authorities. She was special counsel for labor and employment matters to several city and county governments, and was instrumental in the design and implementation of a nationwide alternative dispute resolution program for a private sector client.

Lorber is a magna cum laude graduate in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, and received her Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers School of Law-Camden.

The FMCS General Counsel is responsible for providing legal support to the Director, the agency and its 200 mediators.
