Position: Emergency Attendant

Background of Organization

Easy Does It Disability Assistance is a non-profit public benefit corporation organized to provide a comprehensive system of emergency and support services for disabled Berkeley residents, and currently operates the City of Berkeley's Emergency Services Program for the Severely Physically Disabled. Services include Attendant Care, Transportation and Individualized Case Management.


General Description

The emergency attendant acts under the direction of the shift supervisor and dispatcher. When a consumer has an emergency and needs assistance, the dispatcher will direct the emergency attendant to assist that client. The emergency attendant will respond on location within 30 minutes of the client's initial call for service. Upon arrival, the attendant will complete all necessary paperwork, collect co-payment, and proceed to deliver services with instruction from the client. Services provided by emergency attendants include, but are not limited to:

  • Lifting, positioning and transferring in and out of bed, wheelchairs, etc.;

  • Assistance with bathing, showering, dressing, and grooming;

  • Assistance with toileting, bowel and bladder care;

  • Meal preparation, feeding and clean up; Reasonable laundry, cleaning, and other domestic duties; and Reasonable shopping and errands.


Duties:

Attend orientation, training, and monthly staff meetings. Provide personal assistance services as described above. Complete and submit all documentation pertaining to service calls and payroll in a timely fashion. Adhere to mandatory policy of refraining from wearing scented products whenever conducting Easy Does It business. Participate in resolving conflicts to better achieving client satisfaction. Provide feedback to supervisor as to how services can be improved.


Qualifications:

A minimum of 6 months of experience providing personal assistance services to people with disabilities and/or seniors. Ability to safely assist individuals transferring to and from wheelchairs, beds, etc. Quick performance and excellent communication skills. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, problem solve, and work through stressful situations. Positive personal assistance services job references. Experience working with diverse populations. Ability to travel to all areas of Berkeley on short-notice, on-call basis. Reliable transportation, automobile a plus. Knowledge of Independent Living Movement a plus.
