WAIT A MINUTE, WAS THAT A TEACHABLE MOMENT?

Some learning venues are more obvious than others. Seminars, performance reviews, internships and mistakes-made are a few examples. But what about 4:23 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon, or the interaction that you saw while crossing the street? You bet these are opportunities to learn! How so?

Arguably, wisdom comes from life’s experiences lived with an open mind. By perceiving everyday occurrences as insights into greater wisdom and understanding, each of us is more open to learning, and able to benefit from the knowledge gained.

For example, when having a discussion with a colleague, you might notice an approach or turn of phrase that she used effectively, and add it to your repertoire of communication tools to practice, get feedback on and use.

Recognizing and making the most of these instances, which are peppered throughout the day, allow you to stock your toolbox with tools that you’ve seen work, grow your skills on a continual basis, and appreciate other people’s contributions. Want to give it a try?

EASY TIP:

For the next two weeks, identify one teachable moment each day, and determine how you’ll act on and benefit from that moment.
