SHIFT YOUR THINKING ABOUT CHAOS

The idea that small deviations can lead to large changes lies at the heart of chaos theory.

A common example of this is known as the Butterfly Effect. This theory states that the flutter of a butterfly’s wings in China could affect weather patterns in New York City. Meaning: it is possible for a very small occurrence to lead to enormous results by triggering a "snowballing" series of events.

How does this apply to your work? What many people believe about chaos causes them some sort of pain (worry, fear, a sense of being overwhelmed, etc.). However, if you focus on the possibilities inherent in chaos, you can create a more positive Butterfly Effect of your own, allowing you to change your mindset and reap the rewards of the significant events that will follow. Here’s how:

Tip: If you define your work in general or a situation in particular as chaotic — in the negative sense of the word — think of one action you can take to start the chain reaction of positive events. After taking this action, look and listen for the cues that indicate a positive change is taking place.

The more you employ this approach, the more likely you’ll be able to see and benefit from the affects that emerge. You’ll also be better able to recognize and put into motion more and more chaotic patterns that lead to positive results.

For example, if a meeting is getting out of control, your "Butterfly Effect" action might be to ask the group to take a five-minute break. Upon everyone’s return, you might refocus the group on its goals by asking a question such as, "What patterns or commonalties emerged from the discussion we were having?" From there, group members might increasingly understand each others’ perspectives. And so on…

It’s taking the first step — which seems so minor — that creates the ultimate pattern and can lead to better outcomes.
