August '99 TIP "There can be no tug of war if Resistance: We live in a fluid world. Our resistance to many things is like trying to sweep water up a hill; the minute you rest, it just flows back down. That's pretty stressful, and zaps motivation, clarity and creativity. Wouldnt it be more enjoyable to learn to bob and weave, to go with the flow sometimes? To be willing to let go of the need to be right, and the tension that goes with it? Tip: The next time you catch yourself resisting things beyond your controlfor example, the work style of a colleague or that project with the "creeping" deadline due to no fault of your ownstop, and take out a piece of paper. Draw a line down the middle. On the left side, write five reasons you're resisting; on the right side, write five positive things that can come of going with the flow. Use this list to view the issue more objectively. And remember, this isn't about reducing standards for quality or giving up the desire to consistently refine our work. This is about accepting reality and finding the very best ways to work with things as they are, rather than as we wish they would be. Want more real-world nibbles? Graze our Brain Food Cafeteria. |
