This from an email from Mike Wood, contact at the "Leed pals" website:

"A sports and recreation committee was set up in Late 1914 when the pals were in the early days of training, it soon became apparent that the battalion numbered several good cross country runners among its ranks It was with great sadness, therefore, that they received news of the death of the former Yorkshire cross country champion, 15/216.Private George Colcroft, on 19th of November (1914) Colcroft aged 29,had been taken to Seacroft hospital, Leeds, a week earlier were according to local newspaper reports he had died of complications arising from rheumatism, He was buried in the family plot at Bramley Baptist church on November 22nd, He was the first Leeds Pal to die during Military service."71

Note: There seems to be some connection between the "Bramley Baptist Church' and the "Salem Church" at which I've seen a marriage between William and Alice Colcroft. But I don't know for sure--Rick, March 27, 2002.
