The Federal Trade Commission seeks to enhance the smooth operation of the marketplace by eliminating acts or practices that are unfair or deceptive. The Commission undertakes economic analysis to support its law enforcement efforts and to contribute to the policy deliberations of the Congress, the Executive Branch, other independent agencies. Section 5 of the Federal Communications Act applies to online commerce - a medium that presents problems and opportunities not found in other media. The Commission has worked to educate itself about the Internet and online services in order to assess the implications for its consumer protection mission.
