Introduction

Dear Journalist:

Perhaps you've heard of the Schmio Awards for dubious advertising achievements. Held in New York the same time as the ad industry's annual ClioŽ awards, the Schmios pay tribute to some of the nation's most offensive print, television and on-line advertising.

Each year we ask leading media critics and scholars to create Schmio award titles and designate deserving recipients. Past honors have included such awards as "Excellence in Blaxploitation," "Oh, What A Tangled Web(site) You Weave," and "A Marketing Opportunity Is a Terrible Thing to Waste."

In our search for ad experts, we've identified many thoughtful individuals and organizations who study and analyze advertising and its growing impact on our values, behavior and culture. We designed this compendium of critics, scholars, and watchdog groups to share our research with those of you who cover the issue.

The people and organizations described within can provide you with back-ground information and expert opinions on advertising related issues, from advertising on the Internet to local initiatives that restrict alcohol and tobacco billboards. We hope you'll call upon them.

The rolodex is also available on the web at www.mediademocracy.org/ adcritics.html. We welcome your feedback and any additional contacts you may run across. And if you'd like more information on the Schmios, including a copy of our policy briefing booklet, you can find us on the web at www.mediademocracy.org/schmio.

Best wishes,

Larry Adelman & Viveca Greene
