Prior
to its reconstruction, I-97 south of the Baltimore Beltway was
known as MD 3, a 4-lane road extending from Baltimore to US 50/US
301 near Bowie. We designed the reconstruction of a 2.7-mile long
section, including two interchanges (MD 176, MD 648), to provide
a 6-lane facility. Included were three bridges, 1,500 linear feet
of retaining walls, and 9,000 linear feet of noise barriers. Special
measures were provided for fish passage on Sawmill Creek. I-97
is now a full access controlled highway connecting Baltimore and
Annapolis.
Our
services also included surveys, drainage studies, noise analysis,
and partnering during construction. A special challenge on this
project was the Maintenance of Traffic procedures during construction,
with the entire roadway having to be reconstructed and widened
while carrying about 70,000 vehicles per day.
This
project won the Maryland Pride Award of Excellence in 1996.
