33 is a major east-west route through central West Virginia, connecting
I-79 at Weston, West Virginia and I-81 at Harrisonburg, Virginia.
We surveyed and designed a 6.5 mile section of new 4-lane roadway
east of Elkins to replace an existing 2-lane roadway. Challenges
included large cuts and fills through the mountainous terrain;
fitting the highway on a mountain side near a stream, railroad
and community; and protection of the National Fish Hatchery along
Shavers Creek.
Our
services included surveys, subsurface investigation, geotechnical
analysis including slope design, and preliminary and final design
of the highway and bridges.
