FINDING EFFECTIVE TOOLS IN YOUR "MENTAL ATTIC"

We’re fortunate when mindset-management, communication and leadership tools or approaches become second nature, allowing us to incorporate them flawlessly into our repertoire of interactions. The downside is when we take those approaches or tools for granted or, if we haven't practiced them enough for them to be "unconscious competent" and only remember them as being useful in very specific settings if we remember to use them at all. Not only do we deprive ourselves of the benefit that these tips and tools hold, we’re diminishing our consciousness of our talents.

You can counter this limiting or careless thought by revisiting and reexamining the skills that you have in your "mental attic," and identifying new applications.

Exercise:

Think of a tool or approach that you used with great results, but haven’t consciously used in awhile or have only used in certain situations. Create a list, a mindmap diagram, or a story that details at least 10 more ways you can use that tool in today’s reality. Commit to using it effectively in the next four days. You’ll be surprised that you ever let that tool collect dust.
