Deister Data Collectors

[Deister Home]

Deister Electronics is the only company to offer data collection systems which incorporate three different data capture technologies: magnetic, barcode, and proximity. Some of our units use only one technology, some have dual-technology capabilities, and a third reader type is in the works which will unite all three technologies! Of course, all of our data collector units are compatible with all of our software products. Whatever your data capture needs, we think you'll find a unit that's right for the job by reviewing the following descriptions. If you need further information, or would like specific brochures and sample reports, please don't hesitate to contact us.

The de Watch Bar Code Data Collector:

The de Watch is an extremely durable, versatile, easy-to-use barcode scanner. Its versatility has made it the collector of choice for numerous applications by a wide variety of users.

The de Watch is factory equipped with infra-red optics (as are all Deister bar code readers), so it can read copy-proof, opaquely coated or plastic encapsulated bar code checkpoints as well as traditional, visible, black and white bar codes. The optics are securely recessed inside the housing--there are no exposed "read heads" that could be damaged by a simple drop.

The housing is constructed from an exceptionally strong polycarbonate plastic. The battery compartment and screws are sealed with rubber "O"-rings to help make the unit quite impervious to water. The housing material also provides electrical insulating properties that are several orders of magnitude greater than those of a metal housing.

The polycarbonate housing and surface mount technology (SMT) make the de Watch remarkably small and light. It weighs only 8.4 ounces (with battery) and measures only 2 x 8 x 1.2 inches.

The de Watch is powered by a single 9-volt battery that is easily replaced by the user. The battery compartment is secured with special "snake-eye" screws to reduce the likelihood of tampering. An alkaline battery can provide power for 10,000 to 15,000 activations; a lithium battery can power the unit for up to 50,000 uses.

Operating the de Watch is easy--the unit is activated by pressing a single, sealed button. There is no keypad; there are no complicated codes an employee must memorize when using the de Watch. It can read bar codes at a wide range of angles in any direction. Unusual occurrences can easily be documented by "electronic note-taking" with the Special Event Card; personnel information can be entered simply by swiping a Personnel ID bar code. Information stored in the unit is downloaded to the computer via the de Trans Data Transfer Unit at 9600 bps. Opto-isolation techniques are used, so there are no exposed contacts on either unit.

We also offer a special version of the de Watch, the de Watch guard, as part of a "stand alone" system.

The de Prox Proximity Data Collector

The de Prox is quite similar to the de Watch in its construction but has been equipped to read proximity micro-chips using radio frequency (RF) technology. The housing material and specifications are the same as the de Watch (although the tip is flattened) and it is also powered by a single alkaline or lithium battery.

The major advantage the de Prox has over virtually every other portable data collector is its ability to read encoded micro-chip transponders right through a variety of materials. This contact-free reading capability allows the user to imbed the checkpoint disks into walls, permitting total concealment and security. This aspect has made the de Prox popular at historical sites (such as Mount Vernon) as well as hotels, resorts, and psychiatric or correctional institutions. The reading efficiency of the de Prox is completely unaffected by any nonmetallic materials at thicknesses up to 1.25 inches (with the KSC50 checkpoint).

The de Prox is easier to use than any barcode or magnetic scanner. Like the de Watch it has a single activation button, but does not need to be moved in a swiping or scanning motion to record a checkpoint read. Just place the tip of the de Prox in the vicinity of the checkpoint disk, press the button, and that's it! Audible and visual feedback confirms a good read or warns of a data capture problem as well as providing information on the unit's operating status. Unusual occurrences encountered during an inspection can easily be documented using the Proximity Special Event Card. Employee information can be recorded via specially encoded Personnel ID proximity tags. (Please see checkpoints.)

The dimensions and weight of the de Prox are virtually identical to those of the de Watch. It uses the same Data Transfer Unit, the de Trans. Like the de Watch, all data transfer is accomplished using opto-isolation--there are no exposed contacts anywhere on the de Prox.

We also offer a version of the de Prox designed specifically with industrial applications in mind as part of our flexID product line.

The mag II Magnetic Checkpoint Reader

The mag II data collector is the successor to our intensely popular "WK1000" reader, which has been torture-tested and proven reliable in some of the toughest institutions and facilities in the world. We have incorporated Surface Mount Technology (SMT) in the design of the mag II in order to make it smaller, lighter, and more dependable than ever! In addition, the mag II is now powered by four 1.5-volt, user-replaceable alkaline batteries which can provide up to 80,000 activations. To discourage tampering, the battery compartment lid is secured by special "snake-eye" screws. There is never any "down time" for recharging or factory replacement of batteries.

The mag II uses the Hall Effect to capture data encoded in tough, weatherproof, permanent magnetic checkpoint bars. Each checkpoint is encoded with a unique number; millions of code combinations are available. The mag II can read this magnetic code through any nonmetallic substances (e.g. dirt, ice, snow) at a thickness up to 1 mm.

The housing of the mag II is constructed of the same tough, durable polycarbonate material as that used in the de Watch and de Prox units. There are no exposed switches or contacts on the unit and it is thoroughly sealed with "O"-rings to help prevent water damage.

Operating the mag II couldn't be simpler--just slide the collector down the checkpoint (the "KSM") and the read is done! There are absolutely no switches to activate or codes to enter; the unit is activated by a magnetic read switch protected inside the housing. Audible and visual feedback acknowledges a good scan or warns of an improper data capture as well as providing information about the unit's operating status. The software does the rest! To download information stored in the mag II, simply place the unit in the WK Trans Data Transfer Unit. Contact is made automatically and all data is transferred using opto-isolation and inductive coupling technologies.

The de Protect Real Time Monitoring System

The de Protect has been designed for use in the most hazardous areas in the most dangerous facilities in the world. We have used our years of security experience and feedback from security integrators to develop this data collector and its fully integrated functions. The de Protect meets a wide range of mobile data collection and real time data transmission needs. Its simple operation and user-defined operating parameters offer the utmost in security performance.

For the patrol officer, the operation of the de Protect is simple and automatic. This collector will automatically read a proximity checkpoint, store the information, and transmit the data to the central station. Temporary communications disruptions are handled by an automatic, patented "radio dead-spot bridging" circuit. To protect personnel, the unit incorporates a motion sensor that will trigger a "man down" alarm after a pre-set time interval. An emergency call button is also provided to summon help if needed. A built in microphone allows voice communications and provides hands-free "listen in" capability automatically or by radio command from the central station. The unit can be interfaced to most commercial walkie-talkies.

The "brains" of the system is the WK1205 radio central. This 19" rack mounted industrial computer was developed for high security requirements and to provide 'round-the-clock, trouble-free operation. The internal software monitors time, location, and the movements of security teams and activates various alarms as the need arises. The last known location of the field personnel is reported during an alarm condition.

The Mobitrans Data Transfer Unit allows for radio transfer of data captured by non-radio-linked data collectors from a vehicle or other location. As with the de Protect, various operating parameters may be pre-selected.

The system may be operated in conjunction with commercial VHF (2 m) or UHF (70 cm) equipment. Integration with radio trunking systems will be available at a future date.

For further information on the de Protect, including complete specifications and pricing information, please contact Deister. Due to the complexity of this system, a detailed site survey may be required before cost estimation and system installation.
