No business can expect to be successful in the future if its senior executives believe they have a monopoly on all knowledge, wisdom and expertise within their organisation says communications consultant Roy Sheppard.

Simply asking everyone in the business the above question and REALLY listening to the answers will generate tangible savings. As a professional interviewer I learned a long time ago that if you ask a vague question, you get a vague response. Sharpen the questions for sharper answers.

The next stage in creating an environment in which ‘intrapreneurs’ can flourish is to abolish all suggestions schemes! Why? They aren’t focussed enough. Replace them with ‘Business Improvement Schemes’.

Most suggestion schemes fail because suggestions are provided by too many ill-informed employees. Managers are jaded by what is seen as petty ‘non-value add’ suggestions, and then don’t respond or inform well meaning staff why their suggestions have not been implemented.

Suggestions schemes tend to encourage an obsession in business today for cutting costs and eliminating waste; this is only a small part of the solution. Cost cutting does not grow a business, it merely helps you survive longer. Business success is only possible by increasing revenues. This requires innovation and implementing more profit generating ideas than your competitors.

Nothing promotes an active interest in the future success of any enterprise than a full understanding by everyone of how the business works, what the particular challenges are and a shared desire to solve the problems. The environment in which problems can be solved determines an organisation’s ability to create an entrepreneurial culture - if staff in one department are not actively encouraged to improve performance ‘outside their boxes’ - smaller competitors are probably sitting down to prepare eating you for lunch!

10-15% of all workforces don’t care about any of this stuff - nor will they ever do any more than they are badly paid for. So only concentrate on the 85%.
