When individuals and organizations get into a flow, the things we do best can become second-nature. However, without careful examination and understanding, these "second-nature" actions and behaviors can be difficult to sustain or teach to others.

To replicate and enhance its strengths, your group needs to do is discover the "recipe" that creates each theme that you identified in Tip #1.

Here’s how:

List each theme on a separate flip chart (or piece of paper if group members are performing this exercise solo and will present their ideas to the full group at a later date).

Then, map out all of the actions and behaviors that lead to the strength/theme. Using the "efficiency" example noted in Tip #1, a group might list the following "ingredients" as necessary to maintain or build on that strength:

— Clear job descriptions and project plans/assignments
— Stable, up-to-date technology (software, internet connection, etc.)
— Respectful work environment (people honor agreements, respect one another's time, etc.)
— Excellent time-management skills

Be certain to probe deeply about what each of the actions and behaviors means so that group members aren't making assumptions, and to ensure that they have a shared understanding and definition of what works. (Tip #3 will provide an exercise for probing more deeply to unveil the various layers of your organization's strengths.)

The point of this exercise is to know what day-to-day elements create or support a strength. These are the items that you want to encourage and support, so they don't atrophy. Also, these are the baseline processes that you can actually teach to new employees, ensuring that the "strength DNA" is carried in each member of the organization.
